Your family thinks eating a pig is forbidden to them by the master of the universe. They should be locked up and rehabilitated.

shitrichcollegekidssay:

so i’m not the mod who this is directed at but i want to say that as a person who 1) has a family that doesn’t eat pork for religious reasons and 2) has literally been institutionalized in part for religious beliefs, this ask is shockingly islamaphobic and ableist and you are an asshole.

Using early verses to say that Islam is peaceful is WRONG and disingenuous. Islam has a law by which the later verses are to be followed: those verses are violent. It’s also disingenuous to claim that the Qu’ran is the only important source of teachings in Islam. The Hadiths, too, are considered important by almost all Muslims, and homosexuality is condemned both in them and in the Qu’ran.

I was told differently in my Islam class—my professor said that the Qur’an is considered the word of God and laws made after that by men do not have as much weight and are more controversial. I also know for a fact that Muslim leaders have been condemning all terrorist attacks for decades and stating that Islam is by nature anti-violent and peaceful—and that many Muslim societies have been accepting of people of multiple religions (Muhammad himself as a leader honored the laws of those of other religions). I also never heard homosexuality was condemned in the Qur’an , but I’m not an expert.

Any Muslims want to respond to this?

Charlie Hebdo Talking Points

“You condemning Charlie Hebdo means you don’t care about the victims” / “Muslims aren’t condemning this enough”

“Charlie Hebdo isn’t racist/antisemitic – they are left-wing / it’s satire / they criticize everyone – you just don’t get it ‘cuz you’re not French!”

“What’s wrong with the #jesuischarliehebdo hashtag?”

“But the #jesuischarliehebdo movement is about standing up against totalitarianism”

“Muslims are terrorists” / “Islam encourages terror”

“So what if Charlie Hebdo featured offensive cartoons? What’s the big deal?”

“Why are Muslims scared in the aftermath of this event?”

kierenkisses:

 since yesterday :

  • Muslim places of worship in two French towns were fired upon overnight
  • Three blank grenades were thrown at a mosque shortly after midnight, in west Paris
  • in southern France, several shots were fired in the direction of a Muslim prayer hall shortly after evening prayers.
  • there was an explosion at a kebab shop near a mosque in the eastern French town of Villefranche-sur-Saone on Thursday morning.

Then what do you propose, Einstein? Should the incredible treasure chest of backwards ideas that is Islam simply be ignored in fear of hurting their feelings? Do you know how little of a favor you’re doing oppressed women, homosexuals, trans peoe and other minorities in Muslim countries by refusing to criticize the religion for what it is?

theroguefeminist:

So you reveal yourself to be islamophobic. It’s not about the deaths or the freedom of speech issue. It’s that Islam is a backwards religion.

You don’t know much about Islam. Read the actual Qur’an. It granted women more rights at 700 AD than women in the west had for another 1,000 years. It stated women and men were equal. God has no gender in the original arabic, unlike the masculine God in the bible. The Qur’an put an end to many oppressive practices in place prior to the founding of Islam. The Qur’an says nothing, to my knowledge, against trans people or gay people. The Qur’an condemns acts of violence, especially murder.

Terrorists acting allegedly on behalf of Islam practice Wahhabism—which is completely different than mainstream Islam. There are over a billion pracitioners of Islam around the globe. You really think all those people are terrorists? Then, as another blogger put it, the world would be at war. Again and again, mainstream Muslim organizations have spoken out against these acts of terror. The vast majority of Muslims do not support any of these acts. Oppression of women is a facet of all patriarchal societies, it is not particular to Islam, in fact, the Qur’an is a quite feminist text if you actually read it.

Your ideas are based on misinformation. This is why I oppose people who support Charlie Hebdo—because I think most of the people who do support their ideas at least in part. I recommend actually learning about Islam from the source, not from inflammatory, biased media.

also i’m not denying minorities don’t face problems in some muslim countries – but i trust activists in those countries to mobilize and tell others how to help them – activists i know doing this work have said time and time again they are sick of outsiders using their struggles as an excuse to shit on their religion and their countries – so it makes no sense to take on a white savior complex when speaking of these issues or paint all muslims with a broad brush in response

What Is Charlie Hebdo? The Cartoons that Made the French Paper Infamous

Just in case you weren’t sure that Charlie Hebdo was an antisemitic and islamophobic publication

I also get the strong sense that the paper mostly strove to be offensive to make sales. I don’t really think they’re trying to make any important criticism of oppressive branches of religious institutions. Also, as this comment points out, all of these cartoons are made in the context of growing racism and anti-immigrant sentiment in France. This article goes into more detail on the racism pervading France as the context for the incidents with Charlie Hebdo and provides statistics on racism in the country.
